  • musician: SPERO LUMINA

    Posted on Sep 30, 2008

"TwentyOneRest"...as you know it...will be no more. "Spero Lumina" is now on the horizon; a band reinvented and reborn into new skin and soundscapes. The name change came with the territory in that the musical and lyrical paths being followed were an entirely new identity in itself. The song "Light Show" really was the turning point from where "TwentyOneRest" ended and "Spero Lumina" began. Light Show had tapped into what would become the catapult for a solidified sound and creative powerhouse of symphonic ideas. The framework shifted and musically a story, a war, a movement, a thought had to be told in the same way it was on the silver screen. Beginning, middle, end...the songwriting had to bring more to the table, a finale, a turning point, a climax and a resolve. The music had to portray the feelings of turmoil, hope, fear, revelations before the lyrical content had even been introduced. Enter a collision of stylized vocal masterpieces, aggressive effect-laden guitars at each other's throats, all being commanded by daunting, heavy bass and colossal, intricate percussion. Combine these audible elements with an eternal lyrical message, a question, a thought-provoking idea, a longing, a desire, a confession, and you have an undeniable substance in the midst of a thirsty culture. "Spero Lumina" has arrived...

    MUSICIAN: NOIZ
Made up of O-Side locals, this band couples their reggae influence with a unique So-Cal vibe at every show. And JW has been lucky enough to witness this musical courtship at a live event or two, which can be viewed by going to their artist profile.

    GRAPHIC ARTIST: SHANE DULL
A talented artist and friend, Shane left us too soon. His body of work will live on through this website and continue to inspire those of us who take the time to appreciate it.

    PHOTOGRAPHER: GRANT LAW
I personally like the lighting and the use of open space in Grants' photos and the fact that he's a Mt. Carmel alumni...just a hop-skip-and-a-faceplant away from the JW central hub. Other than that don't know much about him. Won't you tell us, Grant?

    DIRECTOR: STEEL WEB STUDIOS
With the award winning, Glitch, under their belt, this independent studio from San Diego is an up-and-coming force to be reckoned with. You can meet the team at the 2008 Comic-Con International July 23 - 27.

    GRAPHIC ARTIST: JIMMY OVADIA
A San Diego native, Jimmy is an original and talented artist. A sublime mixture of abstract surrealism and pop culture faces, his work stands out in a crowd and is precisely what we're looking to feature. And he's the first graphic artist to register on his own! Thank you kind Sir, thank you.

    MUSICIAN: PROJECT: OUT OF BOUNDS
This band is an eclectic group of individuals whose talents come together to make sweet, sweet music. They hail from Poway, California and have an easy going sound comprised of reggae melodies and the unique voice of their lead singer, Kris Asgharzadeh. We were lucky enough to catch up with them a little while back and get an interview that you can see on their page.

    PHOTOGRAPHER: JOHN HILDEBRAND
John is an accomplished photographer located in Malibu, California. He has traveled around the country specializing in editorial and advertising photography, as well as architectural work. Bottom line, dude's real good at making hot girls look even hotter. Way to go John! Plus he's into helping out the environment and we're into that.

    DIRECTOR: VILLAINS
If you like the series, Heroes, then you'll like Villains (I should know since I'm a fan of the show...and Hayden Panettiere, God bless her). The cast and crew are obviously dedicated and the cinematography is very well done. And if you know San Diego you may recognize some of their backgrounds, as they've been shooting around town. You can check out two parts to their first chapter, Origins, by going to their official website. Keep up the good work you guys.

    GRAPHIC ARTIST: DREW ROBERTS
Yes, that's me. Thank you, thank you. I'd first like to thank the academy...wait, that's not right.

    MUSICIAN: 2ND HAND
They're from Greece and they dig Sublime...'nough said.

    PHOTOGRAPHER: ALONZO MACIEL
A young and gifted artist from Southern California, his work is visually appetizing. Plus he claims to be "the only Mexican you'll meet that doesn't like beans." We're in the process of verifying that statement.

    DIRECTOR: THE INCREDIBLES
Sing it with me - "Once again, back is the incredibles!" Seriously though, their episodes are funny and original. Just not up on our site yet :( Come on guys, the world is waiting for ya.

  • Website Launch

    Posted on Mar 29, 2008

    Hello artists and fans!

You've found our website whether you wanted to or not (we hope you wanted to). Right now this place is more a labor of love than anything else.

We've just launched and are currently looking for talented local artisans to join us in an effort to obtain the most imaginative creations in all forms of local art.

    Our short-term goals are:
    > 1.) To be the best website for talented, local, and independent artists to display their work to a large and diverse online audience.
    > 2.) To be the best website for local art fans to view and interact in ways they never have before with the artists they like.
    > 3.) To be the best platform for local artists to find fans and network with other artists.

    Our long term goals are:
To be honest, there's just not enough space to type them all down here. We've created so many different sections of the site (to be rolled-out accordingly) that it's ridiculous. We want to supply everyone who uses the site with interactive tools and accessibilities to the world of great art that they've never encountered before. At least not like this.
